In order to show students the topicality of the topics being dealt with and at the same time to find an activating introduction to a course, it is a good idea to refer to subject-related topics from the press (e.g. news from the drug war in Mexico).

The topics presented can be used to discuss situations on site, apply theoretical findings or compare modelled ideas with real scenarios.

In addition to current topics, it is also possible to discuss broader, interdisciplinary issues (e.g. altruism and prosocial behaviour) or topics with historical references.

Problem

Solutions

General conditions

Taking up press releases, interdisciplinary or historical topics is suitable as an activating introduction to various types of courses such as lectures or seminars.

Consequences

The method can be used not only as an introduction. It is equally conceivable as an intermezzo during the course or as a form of reflection at the end.

An interesting extension and intensification of the method results from working on the press release/text in small groups. These can receive the text more intensively than in plenary and analyse it for a subsequent discussion. After the small group phase, the discussion can finally be passed on to the plenary.

Materials

Resources

It is a good idea to bring the topics in words and/or pictures to the course to enable students to relate to the medium (newspaper, Internet, TV).

When working in small groups, sufficient press material, historical texts etc. must be made available for handing out.
