Teachers can offer an interesting and motivating introduction to the course, especially if they come from a practical or application-oriented environment and these applications are related to the students' degree programme.

Example: With the help of images from real (traffic) situations and microscopic traffic simulations, typical questions can be raised that students may later encounter in their professional lives.

Experience has shown that situations with a regional connection to the students are of particular interest. For example, projects from the Erfurt area are a good way to start a lively discussion by asking who comes from the region shown and what the situation is like from the perspective of the students who come from there.

If there are examples from the region, students have the opportunity to visit these places, gain their own impressions and make their own assessments. A regional reference allows students to recognise the importance of their studies, it shows them the necessity of using knowledge, methods and their application.

Projects from abroad are also of interest. These can be used to demonstrate the international significance, similarity or diversity of problems and requirements.

General conditions

The form of entry can work very well for a subject (over a semester), a single course or a single topic.

Consequences

For a profitable or at least motivating introduction, students need to be involved - a mere project show will not have the desired effect. The easiest way to realise this is through projects with a regional connection to the students.

If the teacher was or is involved in the project, this increases the attractiveness for the students, as teachers can talk about their personal experiences and possibly convey an image of the profession.

Ideally, the projects should be taken up again in subsequent courses in order to create a common thread and provide reference points, links and reminders for students. It would be interesting to compare the theoretical treatment of the question in the course with the practical treatment in the project shown.
