A method such as the following can help to actively engage with topics, even comparatively large subject areas and amounts of material.

Also under the name "Market of Opportunities" (similar to Teaching concept "The learning exhibition as a topic memory"), group work is staged that can be used to develop and multiply expert knowledge.

In a first step, small groups acquire the necessary knowledge to be available as experts on a topic. This can be done on the basis of key questions provided in advance by the teacher.

In a second step, the results are presented to the members of other small groups. The experts are available to answer questions on their topic. They take on the role of a teacher. The exchange of experts between the groups takes place in such a way that all group members are familiar with all topics at the end and become experts in all subject areas.

In a third and final step, the results of all groups are visualised. This typically results in posters based on flipcharts. These can be presented and compared with each other. The teacher can close gaps in the content, expand knowledge or resolve misunderstandings.

Problem

Solutions

General conditions

The method is suitable for small and medium-sized groups in the context of seminars or seminar-style courses.

Bachelor's students point out that the differences are too great. They get frustrated too quickly.

Consequences

The method has numerous advantages. In addition to activating all students, it requires a well-founded examination of the acquired knowledge. It is not enough just to have the knowledge; it must be explained, processed and, if necessary, developed and modified in discussion. Repeated absorption and multimodal reproduction of the knowledge increase its anchoring and retention.

It also creates a relaxed and creative atmosphere. The method incentivises students to engage with the material. Teachers can (and should) withdraw into a moderating role.

Recommendation: The groups are formed by drawing lots. Experience has shown that this method is suitable for students in the Master's programme.

Materials

Flipcharts or Metaplan paper, moderation material, texts, working aids, further databases for the creation of expert knowledge
