An active start to a course for students and the teacher's expressed interest in the students' ideas are ideal prerequisites for a pleasant and cooperative working atmosphere. In addition, students' and lecturers' expectations can be harmonised, expectations that are too high can be reduced and fears can be dispelled.

The concept is characterised by the fact that it is not content-related wishes but rather general expectations and, in particular, fears that are discussed. After a short period of reflection, the students are asked about this with the help of moderation cards. No limit is set for the number of cards for each student. The cards are published on a voluntary basis. Each student can decide which cards he/she would like to present.

The cards are first collected on a pinboard, then sorted and categorised. The teacher addresses both the expectations and the fears.

The results are used to create a reflection paper that documents the expectations and fears on around 3 to 5 pages like a logbook and describes how they were dealt with.

General conditions

This form of familiarisation and introduction is suitable for small and medium-sized groups.

Consequences

In addition to applying the method, it can be helpful for students to switch between the process level and the meta level. At the process level, students get to know the method almost incidentally because they apply it.
By switching to the meta-level, they discuss the application of this method, their positive and negative experiences with it and can acquire additional knowledge about it (underlying principle: train-the-trainer).
