Role plays and their advantages are described in the didactic design pattern "Role play instead of a lecture" and will be illustrated here by a variation in the application.

In a course focussed on training communication in the context of urban and spatial planning, role-playing is an ideal tool.

After short theoretical contributions, role plays are used to experience communication in different contexts and under different conditions.

Intensity and the resulting high demands on the students involved allow the role play to be used as an examination.

Solutions

General conditions

Using role plays as an examination requires small to medium-sized groups so as not to influence the examination situation too much.

Consequences

The most objective possible assessment of examination performance in the form of a role play requires transparent assessment criteria.
