The presentation of a headline from current media offers a varied introduction to a course.

If possible, a topical reference to the topic of the lecture or seminar can serve to quickly focus the students. Reports from the daily press, current case law or similar are recommended here.

In addition to current topics, a connection with trends, innovative technologies, research and development in other disciplines with an impact on one's own subject / topic is also conceivable.

Possible questions on the topic could be:

  • What significance does the report have for your own subject?
  • How can the statements / results be evaluated?
  • How can the statements / results be evaluated against the background of theory XY / statistics XY?

Inspiration for current topics can be found, for example, at "Words of the day" of the University of Leipzig.

Problem

Solutions

General conditions

Current topics from politics, law, research, etc. can be placed at various points. They can be integrated as an introduction to a course or as a break or practical excursion.

Consequences

Students can be shown the relevance of the course topics with such an introduction. The interconnectedness and interdependence of non-specialised topics with their own can be demonstrated.

The questions to the plenary should be "portioned" in order to gradually introduce the students to the topic. Addressing the students directly gets the discussion rolling.

Experience shows that selecting topics that arouse students' interest is a challenge.
